IRS Phone Scams, Again
They’re at it again – those creepy scammers posing as aggressive IRS agents. In this new scheme, they change their caller ID to make it look like they are calling from the IRS or the DMV. They use fake names, titles, and badge numbers. They know your name, address, and other details about your life, making the call sound official. Most unsettling, they claim that you owe back taxes and that a lawsuit will be filed against you if you don’t pay immediately.
In recent weeks, scam artists are calling to say they have your 2015 tax return, and they just need to verify a few details to process your return. The caller tries to get you to give up personal information such as a Social Security number or personal financial information, such as bank numbers or credit cards.
Remember: The IRS never, ever
Demands immediate payment over the phone
Calls about taxes owed without first having sent you a bill by US Mail
Threatens to call the police to have you arrested for not paying taxes
Demands that you pay taxes without giving you the chance to question or appeal
Requires you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card
Asks for credit or debit card numbers over the phone
